Mult-cultural counselling - a diverse and inclusive service

Greenwich and the surrounding areas are home to people from many different cultural, racial, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds.

We believe that these aspects of our lives can be important to our psychological wellbeing and should not be overlooked in therapy.

Our therapists aim to understand you within the context of your individual life and cultural background so your difficulties are not viewed in isolation. For clients from multicultural and immigrant backgrounds, therapy can sometimes provide a particularly valuable space to explore questions of identity, belonging, family expectations and the experience of living between different cultures.

For people who have grown up between cultures, migrated to another country or come from multicultural families, these different influences can sometimes create unique challenges. At Greenwich Counselling Center, we recognise the importance of considering the cultural and social context of each person's experience.

When cultures meet

Living between different cultures can be enriching, but it can also bring complexity and confusion. You may feel that you belong to more than one culture, or perhaps to none of them completely. You may find yourself adapting the way you behave depending on whether you are with family, friends, colleagues or within the wider society.

For some people, this can raise questions such as:

  • Where do I belong?

  • How much of myself should I adapt to fit in?

  • How do I balance my family's expectations with my own choices?

  • Why do I feel different from people around me?

  • How do I maintain my cultural identity while building a life in Britain?

These questions can be particularly significant for people who have migrated to the UK and for their children.

Multicultural families and relationships

Cultural differences can also become important within intimate relationships and families.

Partners may have different cultural, religious or family backgrounds. Parents and children may experience their identities differently. Therapy can help people explore these differences, communicate more effectively and understand the perspectives of other family members.

A culturally sensitive approach

At Greenwich Counselling Center, we adopt a culturally sensitive approach to counselling & psychotherapy, and we aim to approach each client with curiosity, openness and respect.

Your therapist may ask about aspects of your cultural or family background when they are relevant, but you remain the person who determines what those experiences mean to you.

Multicultural counselling is ultimately about creating a therapeutic space where the whole person can be seen and understood.

Currently, we offer individual culturally sensitive counselling & psychotherapy and multicultural couples counselling.

If you would like to explore cultural identity, belonging, family expectations or experiences of living between cultures, please contact us to discuss how we may be able to help.
