Our approach

There are many different approaches to psychotherapy, and different approaches can be helpful for different people. The therapists working at Greenwich Counselling Center are trained in a range of modalities such as person-centered therapy, existential therapy, CBT/DBT therapy and integrative therapy. We will gather your preferences and needs during the initial assessment to ensure you are paired with the therapist who best meets your specific needs.

At Greenwich Counselling Center, we place particular importance on the therapeutic relationship. We believe that feeling listened to, understood and respected is an important foundation for meaningful therapeutic work. Therapy is not simply about receiving advice from a therapist. Instead, it is a collaborative process in which you and your therapist work together to understand your experiences and consider what might help and what can be changed.

Your therapist may sometimes gently challenge your beliefs and assumptions, help you notice recurring behavior patterns or invite you to consider experiences from a different perspective.

The pace and focus of therapy will depend on your individual circumstances.

What is psychotherapy and counselling?

Psychotherapy and counselling provide a confidential space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, experiences and relationships with the support of a trained therapist.

People come to therapy for many different reasons. Some may be experiencing a specific difficulty such as anxiety or depression, while others may have a more general sense of dissatisfaction, confusion or feeling stuck.

You don't necessarily need to know exactly what is wrong before seeking therapy.

Talking with someone outside your usual circle of family and friends can provide a different perspective and create space to consider experiences that may otherwise be difficult to explore. A trained therapist can also help you to gain a better understanding of yourself, which in turn can enhance your decision-making ability and improve your relationships.

Short-term and longer-term therapy

At Greenwich Counselling Center, we offer both short-term and long-term counselling & psychotherapy, and your preference will be noted at the initial assessment stage. Your therapist will also discuss your needs with you and review the work together as therapy progresses. Although you are not obligated to continue beyond the initial session, we recommend committing to a minimum of six sessions initially, as meaningful therapeutic change often takes time to develop and become apparent.

Short-term counselling is generally considered to be any therapy lasting less than 12 sessions. This is typically suitable for people who come to counselling because they are experiencing a specific problem and would like focused support over a relatively short period.

Long-term counselling generally lasts more than 6 months and typically focuses on exploring longstanding difficulties, relationships, identity or experiences from earlier in life in greater depth.

What happens in a counselling session?

Sessions usually last approximately 50 minutes and take place at an agreed regular time.

Your first session provides an opportunity to discuss what has brought you to therapy and what you would like help with. Your therapist may ask questions about your current circumstances, relationships and relevant experiences.

You do not need to prepare anything in advance.

There is no expectation that you will immediately know what to say. Your therapist can help you find a starting point.

Is therapy right for me?

It is completely normal to feel uncertain about starting therapy.

You may worry about being judged, feel uncomfortable talking about personal matters, or wonder whether your difficulties are "serious enough".

There is no particular threshold that you need to meet before asking for support.

If something is affecting your wellbeing, relationships or ability to live the life you want, it may be worth exploring with a therapist.
